Sandplay is a psychoanalytical therapy administered by certified professionals. It can also be used informally by educators and parents.
Sandplay combines sand, water, toys and imagination to encourage each child to become aware of their feelings, to engage in problem-solving, to empower them to express their feelings appropriately, and to find resolutions to their struggles.
"You can learn more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation." - Plato
First, it gives the child a means to create their own world and the interactions within it, translating personal experience into concrete, three-dimensional form, while using play to consciously and subconsciously work out their problems.
Second, children do not always have the words to describe their feelings or thoughts. Play is the language of the child. Sandplay gives the therapist a means to understand thoughts that the child can't (or won't) express with words.
Third, people love sand (just think how much you love the beach, or why sandboxes are a staple of playgrounds everywhere). Sand is naturally relaxing, fun and thought-provoking. So is water.
Children, age 3 to 11, are the most typical users of Sandplay. Nearly 1 in 5 American children suffer from a diagnosable mental illness.
Sandplay is also effective for adolescents, adults, groups and families as well. Educators, therapists and parents have used Sandplay to help children for years.
